Sufi Poetry from the Jamaica Retreat©

It is Thee Beloved

whom I see

in the deep shadow

of the blue mountain

and the dappled sunlight on the sea.

It is Thee Beloved

whom I see

in the cloud

and the clear blue sky

The palm tree and the almond

the mango and the pine

the sounds of waves

and tumbling stones.

It is Thee Beloved

whom I see

in the myriad patterned beach rocks

and even a croaking lizard!

I am the vast

ocean of light

the Universe

I am a single star

looking down

at me looking up.

I am a drop

I am the sea

a ceaseless lapping wave I

caress the shore

saturate the sand

form the land and

undo it.

I am all of these

and Thee in me

Oh Lord.

Am I the breeze

or does the breeze move me

rocking, ever rocking

in the almond tree.

Am I sweet voices

the sway of a dance

a yearning heart

Or the heart that knows

I am the vast ocean of light

the Universe

I am a single star

looking down

at me looking up!

Lest I be carried away by a strong wind

a thought,

desire, fear

or the wings of my heart.

Must I cling to the earth,

gnarled roots, webbed deep & wide

trunk straight,

mighty

unbending?

Or maybe I can tie my kite string to this tree

and soar!

flow like the pulsing sea

between the shores of our souls

sunlight diamonds dancing on our skin

and

Anchored here,

soar higher still

kissed on the face

by God

Sitting here

upon this highest mountain

I watch the walker on the shore

Trace the shifting edge

of water

not water

receding leaves glistening

rocks upon the sand

Brilliant path

towards the setting sun

hung low

casts rays and shadows

long from rock to stone

Light plays

a million winking mirrors

on shadow’s side

Each rock lit

with inner glow

Is this magic?

No just reflecting me

reflecting Thee.

and Thee in Me.
